The Genius of Michelangelo and the Italian Renaissance

“Michelangelo Buonarroti is universally recognized to be among the greatest artists of all time. His career spanned the glories of Renaissance Florence and the discovery of a New World to the first stirrings of the Counter Reformation.” So says Professor William Wallace of Washington University, St. Louis, from his series on the artist. We will be watching and discussing these half-hour tapes, covering almost all the works and life of the master in two semesters. In addition, we will be reading (12 to 15 pages a week) and discussing selections from H.J. Plumb’s “The Italian Renaissance,” a marvelous look at the years from about 1300-1600. Please buy the Houghton Mifflin 1989 edition of “The Italian Renaissance” and prior to the first day of class on Oct. 6 read chapter one, entitled “The Dawn of the Renaissance.” The discussion questions can be picked up from the CFCC Senior Institute office at least one week before class begins.
